OPEN DEI final event which will take place next Thursday 27 October 2022 (10 am – 4 pm) in Brussels at Representation of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, with the participation of the European Commission and some projects. We have rented a room for about 70 people, in addition to a remote connection for those who cannot attend in person. The project deals with issues related to Digital transformation in four domains/sectors (Agrifood, Manufacturing, Health&Care, Energy). The final event is the perfect opportunity to look at the results, which form an important basis for a fair data economy and the deployment of the EU strategy for digitalization. The final event will demonstrate the milestones achieved by the entire OPEN DEI community and will initiate interesting discussions on the topic of digital transformation. What’s in for you? Pathways towards Generational Renewal in Farming and Rural AreasDate: 27 October 2022 Venue: Online via Zoom Event Description: The conference focused on the theme of ‘Pathways towards Generational Renewal in Farming and Rural Areas’. Research conducted in the Irish context as part of the RURALIZATION project was presented engaging with the issue of farm generational renewal and the wider question of facilitating new generations in rural areas. The discussion also reflected on the policy implications of the results. Two case studies were presented on the issue of farm generational renewal. Wider, cross-cutting outcomes and reflections relating to the policy implications included the scope of policy areas the project’s findings have potential relevance for, such as from housing and transport policy at national levels to European level agricultural policy, in particular the CAP and its objective related to generational renewal. The research also raises many challenges for policy and competing needs to balance e.g. the dreams of young people for one-off housing and sustainable rural housing policy; integration and long-term staying of newcomers in rural areas but also balancing the impact on the receiving area (e.g. on house prices); balancing the needs of successors and the retiring farming generation. Project partners CNRS and TU Delft will organise a short discussion on one of RURALIZATION´s case studies: The Versailles Plain’s Association and peri-urban agriculture diversification. Followed by an introduction by Willem Korthals Altes (project coordination), Dr. Camille Robert-Boeuf (CNRS) will present the case study and illustrate how it promotes farmers’ generational renewal and a more local agriculture in a very urbanised context.
